The KMC executive shall inspect the construction field once the construction has completed the foundation level.

According to historical records, the original building of this museum, had once belonged to a person named Mirza Abdul Karim, from whom the Tagores had purchased it in 1898. However, later in 1919, this house was bought by the Birla’s and pulled down to construct a new building for residential purpose. G.D Birla had entrusted the architects of N. Guin and Co. to construct the Birla Park in true European style.

It wasn’t before 1956, that the five bigha wide Birla Park was converted into the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, after a suggestion made by the then Chief Minister of Bengal, B.C Roy to meet the growing need for a science museum in the city. It took only three years to covert the palatial residence into the first science museum of the country.

In 1959, the Union Minister, Prof. Humayun Kabir, inaugurated the museum for the general public to enjoy its exhibits. With six initial galleries, the museum opened up a new world of knowledge for the Kolkata crowd.  With time, five more galleries were added to the building and a mock coal mine was inaugurated in 1983.

Inaugurated on April 07, 2006, the Eastern Railway Rail Museum spans an area of over 4 acres of land. The museum entrance has a couple of beautifully painted steam engine models, which set the right mood for the walk through the premises. In front is a sprawling lawn with a beautiful landscaped garden, which has parts of it enclosed within glass domes and covered with iron casts. A part of this lawn has a covered shed with a meter gauge locomotive and a narrow gauge train with two coaches, on display. A special attraction of the museum is a three coach toy train that runs within the premises, encircling the entire museum park, to the joy of children and adults alike.

The museum is a treasure chest of information with erstwhile steam locomotives to contemporary electric engines- all on display. There is also a two-storey replica of the Howrah Station with a remarkable collection of photographs, artefacts, miniature models of steam engines, some sculptures created from engine spare parts, etc.

Situated in AJC Bose road, the house of Henry Derozio now contributes as a heritage building of Bengal. The house was first identified around 1998 and since then it has become an important structure for the heritage of Bengal.

What we can identify from outside that it is a three-storey house, now in a dilapidated condition. Red in colour it has contrasting white windows. An elongated balcony supported by bold red pillars and just above it there is another small verandah. It is attached to an adjacent door and its small verandah from outside looks like an inverted dome. And parallel over the top of this verandah lies the arched structure. If closely looked standing just in front of the house, the long verandah, the inverted dome and the high arch shows to be in an exact one line.

The house gives out an eerie feeling due to the lack of maintenance. Though it is not recorded as the eminent monuments of Bengal, it still has its own importance and must not be forgotten.

When one decides to go on a city tour in Kolkata, he is inevitably escorted to the Indian Museum to see its rare collections of antiques, armour, ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies and Mughal paintings. Built by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata(Calcutta), India, in 1814, the majestic building stands tall in its grandeur, complete with its rich cultural significance in the history of India.

The Indian Museum is the largest and oldest museum in India and considered to be the ninth oldest regular museums of the world. Fondly referred to as the Jaadughar or “House of Wonder” by the Samaritans of the city, who flood into the majestic building every day, the Indian Museum is a relic of Italian architecture.

In 1796, the members of the Asiatic Society began to toy with the idea of building a museum in the city to preserve a significant part of history. By 1808, the society had received a grant from the government to erect the building in Park Street. Under the leadership of Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist, who became the founder curator of the Indian Museum, the building finally began to take shape. Wallich who had been captured in the siege of Serampore, only to be released later, had written a letter supporting the formation of the museum in the city and had suggested that it had two main sections, one which housed archaeological, ethnological and technical artefacts and another that preserved geological and zoological specimens. The museum was finally founded in 1814 and Wallich who was named its Honorary Curator and then the Superintendent of the Oriental Museum of the Asiatic Society, donated several botanical specimens from his personal collection to it.

The construction of the museum brought about a new wind of change and spurred the museum movement in India, which eventually led to the establishment of around 400 museums all over the country. The beginning of this movement also marks the start of the modern period after the end of the medieval era.

In 1840, as the Government began taking a keen interest in the geological section and received an additional monthly grant for its development, a new building became the need of the hour. In 1878, the exhibits of the Indian Museum were finally transferred to its present building in Dharmatala, designed by the famous British architect Walter Granville- the man behind the designs of the Calcutta High Court and the General Post Office.

The architecture of the Indian Museum resembles a simplistically designed grand white Neoclassical-style building, with three floors. Each floor houses colonnaded pavilions and massive halls. The total area is divided into thirty five galleries, whose sizes vary depending on what they feature. These are broadly classified under six sections, namely,

• Archaeological or that which preserves sculptures belonging to the Mathura and Gandhara styles of art, Egyptian artefacts and over 50,000 coins from different dynasties, dating as far back as the 5th century BC
• Geological or the one that houses stone and rock specimens, meteorite fragments, fossils, etc.
• Anthropological or the section that depicts the different phases of human evolution, the lifestyle, clothing and habitat of different Indian tribes and the masks they wear for a variety of rituals
• Zoological that has flora and fauna specimens on display
• Economic Botany section which displays specimens related to botanical developments in medicine, agriculture and industry
• Art, which showcases paintings, textiles, jewellery, bone art, wood work, pottery, etc.Another important part of the museum building is its colossal library that houses several books and is open to the common people on very basic membership charges.

Park Street, officially known as the Mother Teresa Sarani and earlier as the Burial Ground Road, was laid out through what was once a deer park that belonged to Sir Elijah Impey, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Calcutta. In the 60s, the nightlife culture of Calcutta slowly began to take form and several clubs and restaurants were built in the area for the entertainment of the rich and the sophisticated. Gradually, the Park Street became the most happening place with its late night party scenes.

In 1967, The Park Hotel chain inaugurated its first grand hotel, The Park, with 150 rooms, on one end of the fashionable Park Street. Soon, other renowned hotels began sprouting up. By the 70s and 80s, many noted musicians and live bands began to play at popular night spots, such as the Trinca’s, Blue Fox, Mocambo and Moulin Rouge. Park Street became “The Street that Never Sleeps”.

Park Street also saw the emergence of several important buildings of erstwhile Calcutta. To name a few, these included the Asiatic Society, South Park Street Cemetery, St.Xaviers Collegiate School and a Seventh Day Adventist Church.
